From Tucson, With Smart Homes: The Story Behind OnGrid

OnGrid started with a phone call from a friend.

He wanted me to fix his smart bulbs. Said he’d unplugged them a couple years ago. I drove over expecting a five-minute job — replace a cable, push a reset button, whatever.

What I found was three smart bulbs sitting in a drawer, and a router that had been replaced since he last used them, and an app that had been updated 47 times, and a username/password situation he’d given up on.

He’d spent good money on those bulbs. He’d been excited to use them. And then the system he’d been sold made it impossible.

Two years of him sitting in lamp light because the “smart” version was too much work.
I sat in his kitchen and thought: this shouldn’t be normal.

The problem isn’t the technology

The smart home industry has a weird disconnect.

The technology actually works. Voice control is fast. Automation is reliable. Cameras stream clean video. Bulbs dim, plugs respond, sensors trigger. The hardware is mature.

What’s broken is the experience of putting it all together.

You go to a big-box store. You buy a smart bulb from one brand, a smart plug from another, a camera from a third, a hub from a fourth. You bring them home. And then you spend your weekend in app stores, reading mounting instructions, calling tech support, and slowly realizing none of these things were designed to work with each other.

If you’re lucky, you end up with a working system after 4-6 hours of effort.

If you’re not, you end up with three bulbs in a drawer.

So we made it the OnGrid way

The idea was simple: what if someone did the hard part for you, in advance, so all you had to do was plug it in?

That’s it. That’s the whole company.

We buy the devices. We pair them. We test them. We label them. We pack them. By the time the box leaves our workshop in Tucson, your smart home already exists — it’s just temporarily disassembled for shipping.

You open the box. You plug in the Nest Hub. You screw in the bulbs. You stick on the sensors. You say “Hey Google, good morning” — and your house responds.

Ten minutes. Maybe fifteen if you’re admiring it.

Why Tucson

A lot of tech companies pretend their headquarters doesn’t matter. Ours does.

Tucson is a city that values doing things right. Slow when it needs to be slow. Practical when it needs to be practical. Not flashy.

When you order an OnGrid kit, every device is unboxed, paired, and tested by a human in our workshop here in town. Not a warehouse in another state. Not overseas. Here.

That sticker on the box that says “Proudly Programmed in Tucson, AZ” isn’t marketing. It’s literal.

What we believe

A few things we’ve decided about how this company works:

Pre-configuration is non-negotiable. Every kit ships ready to use. No exceptions. If we can’t pair a device before it ships, we don’t sell it.

OnGrid Care isn’t a warranty — it’s a relationship. When you buy from us, the support team isn’t a 1-800 number. It’s the people who built your kit. We answer messages directly.

The customer’s time matters more than ours. That’s the whole point of doing the setup work upfront. We’d rather spend an extra 30 minutes per kit so you don’t spend 4 hours.

No locks, no thermostats — yet. We’d rather do a few categories of devices excellently than a hundred categories poorly. Smart bulbs, smart plugs, cameras, doorbells, sensors, displays, kits. That’s it for now.

The tagline is the truth. “Always Connected. Always Smart.” We mean it. Every device, every kit, every day.

What’s next

We’re still small. We ship kits across the country every week. We answer every customer email personally. We make tweaks to our setup process constantly based on what customers actually struggle with.

If you’ve ever bought a “smart” device and ended up putting it in a drawer — we built OnGrid for you. Specifically.
